Our duty

We have duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 to keep learners, staff, visitors and the public safe. Our health and safety lead is [to be confirmed: health and safety lead]. Our insurance: [to be confirmed: insurance cover (employer's liability, public liability, professional indemnity — insurer and policy)]. Training site: [to be confirmed: training site and yard address].

Risk assessment

We assess the risks of classroom, yard and on-road training and review the assessments at least every year and after any incident. Significant findings are shared with learners at induction.

In the yard

  • a site induction before your first practical session;
  • high-visibility clothing and suitable footwear; other protective equipment where the task needs it;
  • walkways and vehicle areas kept separate, a speed limit, and reversing only with a banksman or as instructed;
  • coupling and uncoupling only under supervision, following the procedure you are taught;
  • no mobile phone use while operating or near moving vehicles.

Vehicles

Training vehicles are maintained and inspected, and a daily walkaround check is carried out and recorded before use. Dual controls are fitted where required. Faults must be reported immediately and the vehicle is not used until repaired.

On the road

No on-road training or mock drive until a named instructor has recorded your practical safety sign-off. Instructors may end a session at any time for safety. At most two learners share a vehicle for a practical slot.

Fitness to train

You must not train under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or if you are unwell or too tired. Tell your instructor about any medication that could affect driving. You must meet the medical standards for your licence category.

Accidents and incidents

Report every accident, near miss or dangerous occurrence straight away to your instructor. We record and investigate them and report to the Health and Safety Executive where RIDDOR requires. First aid arrangements are explained at induction.

Your responsibilities

Take reasonable care of yourself and others, follow instructions and this summary, and tell us about hazards. Raise any concern with your instructor or the health and safety lead — you will never be penalised for raising a safety concern.
