Our commitment
Under the Equality Act 2010 we must make reasonable adjustments so that disabled people are not put at a substantial disadvantage. We also want to support anyone who needs help to learn — for example with dyslexia, a mental health condition, a long-term illness, caring responsibilities or English as an additional language.
Examples
- extra time or a quiet room for internal knowledge checks, or questions read aloud;
- a staff member completing an online lesson on your behalf as a recorded adjustment, or extra attempts granted with a reason;
- materials in another format (larger text, printed copies, screen-reader friendly pages);
- adjusted timetables, breaks, or a pause and move to a later cohort;
- help with DVSA's own arrangements for official tests (for example extra time, a reader or a voiceover for the theory test) — these are decided by DVSA, and we help you apply.
Some requirements cannot be changed because they are set by law for safety — for example the medical standards for HGV drivers and the conduct of official DVSA tests.
How to ask
Tell us on your application (there is an optional, restricted "support needs" box), tell your tutor, or email [to be confirmed: general enquiries email address]. You do not need a diagnosis. We will talk to you about what would help, agree adjustments in writing and review them. Information about your needs is kept in restricted records that only staff who need it can see, and is never shared with employers without your permission.
Staff and job applicants
Staff and job applicants can ask the equality lead ([to be confirmed: equality, diversity and inclusion lead]) or their manager for adjustments.
If you disagree
If you think we have not made a reasonable adjustment, use our Complaints policy and procedure.
