Why we have a code

Driving a large goods vehicle is safety-critical work. This code helps everyone learn safely and be treated with respect. It forms part of the Learner agreement (terms and conditions).

We expect you to

  • attend on time, ready to learn, and tell us in advance if you cannot attend;
  • treat instructors, staff, other learners, employers and members of the public with respect — no bullying, harassment, discrimination or abusive language, in person or online;
  • follow every safety instruction, the Health and safety summary for training and the rules of the road;
  • never train or drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when unfit through tiredness or illness — tell your instructor;
  • be honest: complete your own lessons and assessments, never share answers, and give truthful information and genuine documents;
  • look after vehicles, equipment and premises;
  • keep your sign-in details private and follow the Acceptable use policy;
  • tell us about anything that affects your fitness to drive or your licence, as the law requires you to tell DVLA;
  • raise concerns about your own or someone else's safety with our safeguarding team ([to be confirmed: safeguarding contact email address]).

What we will do

Treat you fairly and with respect; explain our decisions; make reasonable adjustments; listen to your concerns; and protect you from harm.

If the code is broken

Most issues are resolved with a conversation. For more serious or repeated breaches we may give a written warning, set conditions, suspend training while we look into it, or end your place under the Learner agreement (terms and conditions). Before a decision to end your place we will explain the concern and listen to your account. Where there is an immediate risk to safety, an instructor or member of staff may stop a session or suspend training straight away. Suspected malpractice in an assessment is dealt with under the Assessment appeals policy. You can challenge any decision through our Complaints policy and procedure.
